The Truth About Installing Roofs During Winter

Written By: Jeremy Berg – President at Guardian Roofing

In Texas weather can go from 90 degrees Fahrenheit to 20 degrees overnight.  Its often said if you don’t like the weather in Texas just stick around a few more minutes because it’s going to change. SO, what if you’re getting a new roof? Can it be too cold to install a new roof?  We went to Owens Corning who happens to be one of the largest producers of shingles, and looked on their Technical specs. Generally, Owens Corning shingles strips are thermally activated at temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

What happens if its below 40 degrees?

According to Owens Corning the crew should apply roofing cement underneath every laminate shingle with a caulking gun and then press the shingles into the cement. This will help prevent the wind from lifting them before there is sufficient heat for them to self-seal. Keep in mind the one major concern is making sure compliance with all manufacture guidelines are met so that the manufacture warranty is not voided by improper installation.

Owens Corning recommends Hand sealing all shingles along the rake edges. Each shingle should get four spots approximately 1 inch from the edge. The roofing cement should be Compliant with ATM D4586.

On 3 Tab shingles only 2 spots are needed. Remember to take caution that the roofing cement does not go past the shingle edge when pushing down on. Nailing is the usual specs. 4-6 nails per manufacture requirement.

We also went to the GAF another large manufacturer of shingles web site and looked at their technical specs. GAF was more concerned with damaging the shingles prior to installation.  There three biggest concerns were cracking, lack of sealing, foot damage or tearing. They also noted that if any of these issues come up its the responsibility of the applicator and is excluded from GAF’s responsibility under the terms of our Limited Warranty, which covers only manufacturing defects.
