TPO Roofing Study From GAF

TPO Roofing Study From GAF

GAF Conducts Largest TPO Independent Study

GAF recently published their results from what they have considered to be the largest independent TPO Roofing studies. When it comes to commercial roofing TPO is one of the most popular roofing choices especially for commercial roofing in Dallas/Fort Worth.

What is TPO Roofing?

Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) is a single-ply reflective roofing membrane made from polyprophylene and ethylene-propylene rubber polymerized together. It is typically installed in a fully adhered or mechanically attached system, allowing the white membrane to remain exposed throughout the life of the roof. The first sheet of TPO roofing membrane was installed in 1989 and since then millions of square meters of TPO has been installed worldwide.

GAF TPO Roofing Study Results

Why Did We Do This?

  • The increasing popularity of TPO roofing systems has led to much confusion, exaggerated claims, and misinformation about TPO as a product class (and about which TPO brand performs the best).

  • GAF engaged Structural Research Inc. (SRI), a well-known and highly respected laboratory that has done testing with UL, NRCA, and MRCA, to perform the largest, independent performance study of the four major U.S. TPO brands (see page 11, in SRI Executive Summary).

What Did SRI Do?

  • Throughout 2013 and early 2014, SRI independently obtained various rolls (a total of 45 in all) of all of the major TPO brands:

    • GAF EverGuard Extreme® TPO (50 and 60 mil), GAF EverGuard® TPO (60 mil), Carlisle Sure-Weld® TPO with OctaGuard XT (60 mil), Johns Manville TPO (60 mil), and Firestone UltraPly TPO (60 mil).
    • Over 400 samples were cut from the 45 rolls. Those samples were subjected to over 6,000 individual measurements over the course of the study.
  • SRI conducted a variety of ASTM physical property testing including thickness above scrim and weld strength which showed that the four TPO brands exhibit relatively similar performance on these tests. It wasn’t until accelerated aging using ASTM heat aging, weathering, and weight loss tests — the tests most closely associated with long long-term membrane performance — were conducted that the various TPOs exhibited significant differences.

What Did The Results Show?

Key Finding 1 –All brands tested exceeded minimum ASTM D-6878 standards

While there were variations in the three key physical characteristics (overall thickness, thickness over scrim, and weld strength) of each brand, no one brand was significantly better than any other in these tests. (See examples of results on pages 4-5 in SRI Executive Summary)

Key Finding 2 –There were significant differences between brands in accelerated aging tests

Accelerated heat aging is one of the most important indicators of how long a TPO membrane will last.1,2

  • The top performing class of membranes in the ASTM heat aging test (D573 @ 275°F) were GAF EverGuard Extreme® (60 mil) and EverGuard Extreme® (50 mil), both of which had no visible failures for over 190 days.
  • The second best-performing class of membranes were GAF EverGuard® TPO and Firestone TPO, which failed at 112 days and 105 days, respectively.
  • The third best-performing membranes were Carlisle and Johns Manville, which failed at 77 and 70 days, respectively. (See page 9, top chart, in SRI Executive Summary)

1Correlating Accelerated Laboratory, Field, and Thermal Aging of TPO Membranes, Journal of ASTM International, 2011, v. 8, pages 50-70.
2A Study of Longevity, Professional Roofing magazine, February, 2013, pages 44-50.

Key Finding 3 –There were even more significant differences between brands in the amount of weight lost during accelerated aging tests

During the ASTM accelerated aging test described above (D573 @ 275°F), very significant weight differences were recorded by SRI. Weight loss is important because it can lead to erosion and membrane failure. Once the membranes had experienced 1.5% weight loss, degradation occurred rapidly and the membranes were considered to have failed.

  • The best-performing TPO roofing membranes were GAF EverGuard Extreme® (60 mil) and EverGuard Extreme® (50 mil), which first failed at over 190 days.
  • The second best-performing membranes were GAF EverGuard® TPO and Firestone TPO, which first failed at 125 days and 136 days, respectively.
  • The third best-performing membranes were Carlisle and Johns Manville, which first failed at 56 and 70 days, respectively. (See pages 4-8, in SRI Executive Summary)

Key Finding 4 –There was surprising variation in the consistency of membranes produced by each brand.

It is reasonable to expect that membranes manufactured by an individual manufacturer should be relatively consistent from one production run (or from one plant) to another. However, the study found that some brands perform much more consistently than others.

DFW Roofing Industry Using Drone Technology

In a recent article originally published by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram the topic of drone usage in the roofing industry was highlighted. At Guardian Roofing we believe in using the latest technology in the roofing industry as well as providing an even more accurate report and roofing evaluation for our residential and commercial roofing customers.  Our team of roofing professionals are equipped with the industries leading drones to be used when inspecting a customers roofing or surveying recent hail or storm damage.

The original article “Next time your roof gets hit by hail, a drone may inspect damage” posted on the Star-Telegram website discussed the experience from a customers perspective on what it’s like to see a drone surveying their roof during an insurance adjusters inspection.

When Pam Wilson got a recent call asking if her insurance company could use a drone to inspect her hail-damaged roof, she didn’t hesitate to say yes.

“I thought it was pretty cool actually,” Wilson said. “My 16-year-old son is going to be so jealous.”

The sight of a small, four-propeller drone, camera attached, hovering above Wilson’s hail-damaged roof was enough to draw stares from passers-by as it buzzed around like an angry bee.

One neighbor who was pushing her baby in a stroller stopped to take a cellphone picture. A roofer driving by in a pickup hit the brakes and did a double take.

Soon, the use of drones to inspect roofs could become so routine that no one bats an eye.

“It’s something we’ve been looking at for a while but this is our first time using it,” said Carrie B. Bonney, a spokeswoman for Farmers Insurance.

FOR A LOT OF INSURANCE ADJUSTERS, THE LADDER MIGHT SOON BE A THING OF THE PAST.

Mark Hanna, Insurance Council of Texas

The drones are in a testing phase but the hope is that the unmanned aircraft can check for damage far more quickly and safely than a human adjuster.

“Hopefully, we’ll get a faster inspection,” Bonney said. “In this case we’re going out and using the drone and then having an adjuster look at it. It could take an adjuster a few hours to inspect this roof where a drone could do it in 20 minutes.”

Farmers isn’t the first insurance company to try out drones. State Farm received permission to test drones in 2015 and used them last year around Atlanta and St. Louis.

State Farm, however, is not using drones to assess damage in the March 26 storm that ravaged parts of Denton and Collin counties, said spokesman Chris Pilcic. The Insurance Council of Texas has estimated the storm will have insured losses — mostly from hail damage — of about $300 million.

“We’ve been engaged in numerous test flights in a number of states to better understand how UAS [unmanned aircraft systems] technology might serve as an additional tool to our claim teams,” Pilcic said. “We can say that so far we are pleased with the progression of our research and development.”

3.5 millionProjected number of drones being used for recreational or educational purposes by 2021.

Other insurance companies have also shown an interest in using the technology, and Mark Hanna, a spokesman for the industry group the Insurance Council of Texas, believes it will become commonplace.

“For a lot of insurance adjusters, the ladder might soon be a thing of the past,” Hanna said. “It’s easy to assess damage. It’s easier than getting up on the roof. It’s a very good diagnostic tool.”

Drone use on the rise

An FAA report released last month predicts the hobbyist drone fleet will triple from 1.1 million units in 2016 to over 3.5 million units by 2021, but noted that growth among hobbyists “is likely to slow” as prices stabilize and industry matures.

The report, titled “FAA Aerospace Trends 2017-2037,” also said the commercial drone fleet will grow tenfold from 42,000 in 2016 to 420,000 by 2021.

“The commercial drone sector is very dynamic and appears to be at an early stage of growth,” the report said. “Unlike the hobbyist sector, FAA anticipates that growth in this sector will continue to accelerate over the next few years.”

So far, the FAA’s line of sight rules don’t allow companies like Amazon to make deliveries to your home with drones, but one company has been allowed fly the unmanned devices without line of sight for agricultural use.

Provides great detail

Bill Breedlove, who was flying the drone for Farmers Insurance, has been a licensed pilot for 30 years. During it’s 20-minute flight of the roof, the drone, with a high-definition camera underneath, goes through a three-step process looking for damage.

THE MAIN THING IS STAYING OUT OF THE WAY OF OTHER THINGS IN THE AIR.

Bill Breedlove, drone pilot

“It takes pictures from the corners and the sides,” Breedlove said. “From the GPS position and the angle of the camera, it can decide the dimensions of the roof. The next phase is called the lawn mower phase where it scans the roof to get general details. And then final stage drops down to about 15 feet above the roof for a detailed picture.”

Compared to flying a plane, Breedlove said flying a drone isn’t difficult. The only concerns are keeping away from trees and dealing with windy Texas weather.

“The main thing is staying out of the way of other things in the air,” Breedlove said. “If you know the airspace and the FAA regulations, that’s pretty easy.”

Roofing Contractor Selection Tips

Roofing Contractor Selection Tips

Selecting a properly certified and high quality roofing contractor is important and often a difficult task for consumers who are unfamiliar with the roofing industry. It is important to select certified roofers who will be in business to honor their warranty in the future. There are a large number of roofing contractors who are not certified and have both low quality installations and poor workmanship. The average start-up business is usually closed within three years, and may be out of business when potential roofing problem could arise.

The following are tips and important questions that can help you select a professional roofing contractor…

How long has the company been in business?
An established company will most likely be around in the future should any problems arise.

Does the contractor have a permanent business office address, phone, and email?
An established contractor should be able to provide a business address, phone, and email. A permanent business address is a sign of a stable company.

Does the company supply a written contract and estimate (and do they require a deposit)?
All job specifications and prices should be supplied in writing. Established companies with strong financial stability usually do not require a deposit. Deposits are common, be wary of any contractor requesting more than 1/3 of the cost of the project.

Check to see if the company is a member of the Better Business Bureau and the local Chamber of Commerce.
Research all potential contractors on the Better Business Bureau and your local Chamber of Commerce. Look for the overall business rating and keep in mind the general size of the company when checking for complaints.

Guardian Roofing is proud to have been rated an A+ company with the Business Bureau and also a member of the Keller & Fort Worth Chambers of Commerce.

Does the company have liability insurance?
This is important as an established roofing contractor company should have liability insurance.

Check to see if the contractor is part of local and national industry associations.
A strong established roofing contractor should be a member of trade associations.

Look for a contractor who is a certified installer of the products they offer.
Certified contractors can offer stronger warranties on the products they install and follow stricter installation guidelines.

Look for a contractor who offers emergency service.
A contractor who offers emergency service will be able to address a serious problem quickly, even after regular business hours.

Ask the roofing contractor for references of previous customers.
An established company should have a long list of satisfied customers who are willing to be contacted.

Is communication an easy task with the company?
Communication should be easily accessible between the customer and the company.
